SO-PE is an NIH/NHLBI funded mechanistic randomized clinical trial to evaluate the mechanisms by which supplemental oxygen affects the pulmonary artery, right ventricle, and metabolic processes in 80 patients with acute PE. The study will also use a porcine model of PE developed in Aarhus University, Denmark, to determine how treatment with supplemental oxygen affects pulmonary blood flow and cardiac metabolism.
